The Tutorial!
Before we get into this, let me just say that the Diminished chord is
as important as any other chord! However, for this topic, Pentatonics,
we're not including it in the study. Honestly, as cool as it is, and
even though it is used . . . a LOT by many players, including me, it's not
used as "commonly" as the other 6 chords of the harmony chord scale.
So, what is the Pentatonic Scale, and why does every pro player use it?
I'll explain it in very simple terms. Briefly. But you'll get it!
Why do we use it? Many reasons. But let me ask you this . . .
What if you could eliminate approximately 29% of the
wrong notes you hit when improvising, and soloing?

OK, the Penta scale comes out the the basic major scale. The major

scale has 7 notes. 7 chords in the harmony chord scale. 2 of those
notes can create a lot of clashing! Because . . . they don't fit in
some chords you usually use in many songs!
What makes a scale Major is . . . a half-step between the 3rd & 4th, and
7th & 8th notes. Look at C. 7 notes from C to C up an octave. C D EF G A BC
And there's a half-step between E & F, and B & C.
If we simply remove the 2 half steps in the major scale, the remaining
notes fit great over the chords we use the most, in most songs! And the
2 notes that usually clash . . . are gone!
C D EF G A BC: Half step between the 3rd & 4th, and 7th & 8th notes.
So we drop the F (the 4th) and the B (the 7th)! And what do we have left?
C D E G A !
I should mention that the Relative minor shares the same scale and chords
as its Relative Major. As in, key of C major, Am is the Relative minor.
So . . . The C Major Pentatonic and Am Pentatonic scare the same notes.
A C D E G ! ! !
That being said . . . when you learn the 5 Am Penta Position, you learn
the C Major Penta scale positions at the same time! Just a different start
point . . .
So, I have a new challenge for you. After applying the above, play a backing
track, or jam with a buddy, or at your next rehearsal . . . use this info,
and try to play a bad note!
OK . . . NOW . . . Now is the time to hit the workshop! Let's turn these
5 notes into power house tools we can use all over the entire fretboard
or keyboard! Or up and down your horn!
I'll show you how! And I'll help you be able to play these scales, in useful,
melodic solos . . . AT BLAZING SPEED!
